Professor Nuno Severiano Teixeira

Professor Nuno Severiano Teixeira specialises in International Relations and military history, and is a former member of the Portuguese government.

He is a Full Professor at New University of Lisbon (Nova University) and currently Visiting Professor at Georgetown University in Washington DC. He is also Director of the Portuguese Institute of International Relations.

He has been published internationally in fields such as International Relations, the history of Portuguese foreign policy, the history of European integration, military history and on matters of security and defence. He coordinated work on the book Military History of Portugal which was recognised with the Gulbenkian Foundation’s History of Europe Award in 2017.

He was Vice-Rector at Nova University (2013-2017). As a guest Professor he taught at Georgetown University (2000), the Institute for European Studies at the University of California, Berkeley (2003-2004) and the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies of the European University Institute in Florence (2010).

Distinguished politician

Professor Teixeira has also had a distinguished career in politics, having served as Portugal’s Minister of Home Affairs (2000-02) and Minister of National Defence (2006-09). He was previously Director of the National Defence Institute (1996-2000).
